In Greek, archon simply means "ruler". In Gnostic writings of the second to fourth centuries CE, the archons are the rulers of this world: powerful but lesser beings created by the flawed creator Yaldabaoth, who govern the heavens and the planets and keep humanity from knowing its true origin. The idea is ancient.

The Apocryphon of John, found at Nag Hammadi, describes how Yaldabaoth and his archons see an image of the true, perfect Human reflected in the waters and try to copy it. Each ruler builds one part of Adam's body. But the body lies motionless until Yaldabaoth is tricked into breathing into it the power he took from his mother, Sophia. Adam then shines brighter than his makers, and in jealousy they cast him down into matter and wrap him in a mortal body.

The Hypostasis of the Archons (also called the Reality of the Rulers) retells Genesis from this angle. The rulers try to seize Eve, plan the Flood, and later pursue Norea. In the Apocryphon of John, they also send their angels to the daughters of men, a Gnostic version of the Watcher story in Genesis 6 and 1 Enoch.

Scholars see the archons as a blend of Jewish angelology, Greek astrology and Platonic philosophy, a way of explaining evil and fate. Modern readers, especially in ancient-visitor circles, often read them as a hierarchy of makers who engineered humans and then tried to control them. The texts themselves are about salvation through knowledge, not about beings from other planets.

Strangest fact

The archons build Adam's body limb by limb, but cannot make it stand up, and only succeed by being tricked into giving away their own stolen power.

What a skeptic would say

The archons are theological figures representing the planets and fate in late antique thought; reading them as literal visitors is a modern interpretation.
