What is Alex Dietrich known for?

Alex Dietrich is a former US Navy F/A-18 pilot who retired as a lieutenant commander. In November 2004 she was flying with the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group off southern California.

On November 14, 2004, she piloted the second aircraft when Commander David Fravor was sent to investigate radar contacts tracked by the USS Princeton. She has said she and the other aircrew watched a white object shaped like a Tic Tac for about five minutes and that it seemed to respond to their movements.

Dietrich spoke publicly about the encounter for the first time in a 2021 CBS '60 Minutes' interview, which largely matched Fravor's account. She has generally avoided claims about what the object was, saying she wants such reports treated as normal safety issues rather than as proof of anything extraterrestrial. The Defense Department has described the object only as unidentified.
