What is Jared known for?
Jared is the sixth generation from Adam in the Genesis 5 genealogy. He fathers Enoch at 162 and lives 962 years, the second-longest life in the Bible after his grandson Methuselah. Genesis says nothing else about him.
His name, Yered, comes from a Hebrew root meaning to go down. The Book of the Watchers in 1 Enoch builds on this: it says the two hundred Watchers "descended in the days of Jared" on the summit of Mount Hermon (1 Enoch 6:6). The Book of Jubilees uses the same wordplay, saying the angels came down in his days, though Jubilees presents them as teachers who were later corrupted. Christian works such as the Cave of Treasures also place the fall of the Sethites in Jared's lifetime.
Jared is known only from the Genesis genealogies and the traditions that grew around them. His importance on this site comes from the date he gives to the Watchers' descent.
The site uses 'the days of Jared' as the date 1 Enoch gives for the Watchers' descent on Mount Hermon.
