What is R. C. Seaton known for?
Robert Cooper Seaton was an English classical scholar who worked on the Greek poet Apollonius of Rhodes. He edited the Greek text of the Argonautica and in 1912 published the Loeb Classical Library translation.
The Argonautica, written in the 3rd century BCE, tells how Jason and the Argonauts sailed to Colchis for the Golden Fleece with the help of the sorceress Medea. On the voyage home they reach Crete, which is guarded by Talos, a giant of bronze said to be the last of a race of bronze men. Talos throws rocks at the ship. His one weak point is a vein near his ankle, closed by a thin membrane; Medea bewitches him so that he grazes it on a rock and his life drains away.
Seaton's translation is now public domain and appears on Project Gutenberg.
The site quotes Seaton's translation (condensed) for Talos, the bronze man of Crete.
