What are Tremonton, Utah known for?

Tremonton is a small city in Box Elder County, northern Utah. On 2 July 1952, US Navy Warrant Officer Delbert C. Newhouse, a trained photographer driving with his family near the town, filmed a group of bright objects moving across the sky with a 16 mm camera.

The film was studied by the Air Force and by a Navy photographic laboratory, which reported that the objects did not look like any known aircraft or birds. In January 1953 the CIA's Robertson Panel reviewed it along with a 1950 film from Great Falls, Montana. The panel concluded that the images on the Tremonton film were probably caused by sunlight reflecting off seagulls, which are common in the area near the Great Salt Lake.

UFO researchers have argued over the seagull explanation ever since, while sceptics consider it reasonable. The film became one of the best-known pieces of 1950s UFO evidence.

Why it is on Credible Theories
